What Is The Opening Sentence To Your Autobiography?

Today WordPress gave Bloggers an intriguing writing prompt:

“You’re writing your autobiography.
What’s your opening sentence?”

The first words that popped into my head were:

“I never would have believed it, if you had told me twenty years ago that this would happen.”

Immediately I sat back, pondering the fact that it had been almost twenty years since the suggestion was made to set off on the adventure that culminated in reaching a particular destination … an utterly unimagined and unimaginable outcome.

No way could I have predicted or even wild imagined that the journey would have landed where it did.

All the steps in between seemed like some alternative, strange, chaotic and outlandishly extravagant dream.

Who on earth could have imagined this?

How on earth did it happen?

I was taken aback at having been asked such a leading question, especially as it relates to autobiography and I know that I have been putting off walking straight into this for years and years and years!

Yes, there have been teasers amongst my many writings on my blog and in all sorts of other places where I speak or write, eg on social media platforms … little snippets and tiny peeks into a story that unfolds in a dance of little steps that are not so easily discernible and would take great dedication for anyone to piece together into a coherent timeline, to create a story that follows a sequence of understandable and compelling events.

The question was merely “You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?”

Thus, having answered, I guess that I shall leave the rest of the story hidden for now and to someday be more fully revealed.

How would you have answered the question, I wonder?

Mindfully,

Holly x
